The problem with using general language dictionaries is that they are too general and do not describe the nuances, especially for words that have subtle differences in meaning. Take for example warau meaning generally to laugh or smile. But what about smirk? Chuckle? Smile without laughing? A forced smile? A guffaw? This book will boost your word power significantly. With a year's worth of weekly lessons, each lesson focuses on one general verb and one situation and with pictures and examples you will be able to express yourself in Japanese much more fluently. The pictures and examples allow you to understand the subtle differenes between phrases, with explanations in Japanese (with full furigana) and translations in English, Chinese and Korean for full understanding. Each lesson also has a quiz to test what you have learned and answers are included. A bonus section on idomatic phrases is included as well, for those hard to understand phrases that have a common kanji and seem similar yet have very different meanings, such as for kao (face): kao ga hiroi, kao wo tsubusu, kao wo dasu -- do you know the difference? An excellent and fun way to boost your word power by ALC, the publishers of Nihongo Journal. Recommended Level: High beginner level and upwards. (from level 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test onwards).

This is the third installment of the best selling Japanese in MangaLand series, where students will consolidate and further expand their Japanese skills at the intermediate level. Very much like Japanese in MangaLand 2 this book offers another set of 15 lessons in which intensive study of grammar and conversation is combined with examples taken from manga that introduces "real" everyday spoken Japanese - not the typical "textbook Japanese" stuff. The conversational lessons, included within, will also help you communicate in various situations of everyday life in Japan: from how to order in a restaurant to how to speak the Osaka dialect; from how to use the honorific language (keigo) to the most casual and vulgar expression usually found in manga.

Japanese in MangaLand 3 closes a circle: combining the contents of the three Japanese in MangaLand books, all the requirements of grammar, vocabulary and kanji of Level 3 (Intermediate) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test are completely covered. This book includes a great deal of exercises, grammar and vocabulary reference appendices (especially designed for Proficiency Test candidates), and many other bonuses. So, once again, prepare tot read, learn, and enjoy yourself as you embark on the last leg of your journey through MangaLand by entering the final book of the Japanese in MangaLand series.

How to use grammar in Japanese has always been a difficult part of learning the language, as subtle nuances between phrases can have a dramatic impact on meaning. When can you use a specific grammar? How do you use it? This book is meant to address these questions by grouping grammar expressions by type of usage, so that you can compare the situations the phrases are used and understand when and how to use them. Each chapter addresses a particular situation and the various phrases used at that time and the nuances that exist between them. Starting with a short quiz, you can test your knowledge of the barious patterns before studying to see where your weak points are. Explanations are given in Japanese, English and Chinese, with lots of examples to help you understand. Finally a quiz tests your understanding of the various grammatical patterns. This book has twenty chapters each with a particular situation in mind, and various grammatical points that can be used. Also of note are "mini chapters" that look at important grammatical points that are especially tricky for beginners, including the difference between "wa" and "ga", "a~" "so~" and "ko~", and more. An index of the various grammatical structures is at the end. An excellent book for studying Japanese grammar, especially for those looking to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 3 (JLPT). From Alc Press, 238 pages, perfectbound. 7.25" x 10.25". Recommended Level: Advanced Beginner to Intermediate; or studying for level 3 on the JLPT. A knowledge of reading in hiragana, katakana, and beginner kanji is necessary for using this book as there is no romaji readings of Japanese text.
