| | | The Shisa is a mythical beast that finds its Japanese origins in the folklore of Okinawa, and is commonly thought of as the one icon most representing this tropical other-worldly region of Japan. The story has it that a village on Okinawa island that was being terrorized by a sea dragon was granted protection by the king, who gave a young boy a small figure of a Shisa, which, when the sea dragon came, produced a ferocious Shisa that battled the dragon back into the sea and so saved the village from further attacks. This is how the Shisa came to be known as the guardian of the Okinawan islands. The was even a Shisa in a Godzilla movie once (Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla). These monstorly cool Shisa design sandals look like they came stright out of Okinawa, with their snakeskin-style straps and Okinawan illustration.
