| | | The Yokozuna is the highest rank in sumo wrestling, often recognized by the large, heavy "Shimenawa" rope around their waist. Two conflicting legends state the birth of the Yokozuna, one stating that a 9th century wrestler named Hajikami wore the shimenawa as a handicap and dared anyone to grab it, while the other says, legendary wrestler Akashi Shiganosuke wore it as a sign of respect when visiting the Emperor, who then decided to dub him Yokozuna. (What is this?) | | | One of the oldest and most seasoned veteran warriors of a tribe of forest elves, Allean is taciturn and blunt in her dealings with others as leader of the tribe's combat troops. Due to her habit of teaching people what they're doing wrong conversations with her often turn into lectures, and she is both revered and feared by the other forest elves. She's had a long relationship with Echidna, who she often chastises for her loose ways and is made fun of in return for her inexperience with men. It's hard to tell whether they're bound together by friendship or animosity.
The appearance of the half-elf Nowa in the forest elf community marked a turning point for Allean, who upon recognizing her potential took her under her wing and appointed her to the position of "forest watchman". The elf village elders did not approve however, and drove her from the village with the excuse that she must joine the Queen's Blade tournament. Distraught, Allean secretly set out for the tournament as well, to protect the girl whose sudden appearance had awoken feelings long dormant in the veteran elven warrior.

| | In Japan, hanko (name stamps) are used in lieu of signing your name as the way of signifying agreement, and the culture of these stamps has always been fascinating to gaijin unfamiliar with Japanese ways. Now you can get any kanji name you want on your very own Japanese name stamp. This is a quality stamp made of wood with any custom name or message you want on it, which will be a great connection to you and Japan. This name stamp is also legally able to be used in Japan (just register it with your local city office). You can choose between 1-6 kanji, hiragana or katakana characters, and the Japanese staff of J-List will be happy to help you choose the best character for what you want to express. This type of stamp is usually used for names, and there are multiple approaches foreigners can take when choosing a name. Here are three examples:  |  |  | | This is an example of a name in katakana, the Japanese writing system used for foreign words and names. It says "Payne." | Kanji can be chosen based on their pronunciation, too. In this case we're using the "peh" sound from Peking ("North Capital") and the "in" sound from the Buddhist temple Byodoin near Kyoto. | There are ways of choosing kanji based on meaning, called ateji or forcing a reading on a character. For example, "Payne" comes from the French pan (bread), the name could be written with a character (archaic in this case) for bread. |

(What is this?) | | | "To all the fools who dare oppose me - turn into the stone statues that line this arena!" Ardra is the victor of the past two Queen's Blade tournaments and current reigning queen. The daughter born from the coupling of the land's highest church leader and the lord of the underworld, she is a cursed half-demon. Eight years ago, using her innate summoning abilities she called forth the demon Delmore, forging a contract with him that granted her powers of "petrifying gaze" and "flesh-rending secret blades", among others, an enormous power unknown to mere mortals. From that point her own physical development halted.
Since becoming Queen she has put the army and assassination squads under her own direct control, greatly strengthening them. Using brute force and instilling fear in the hearts of her enemies she has come to wield absolute power - though not used against her own people, who regard her as a fair ruler. Even so this is not the full extent of her power: to prevent its total release she has sealed it away in her own left arm.
In her childhood she spent her days as a wanderer, and her younger sister from whom she was separated since birth meant everything to her. The conjurers of the imperial court have predicted among themselves that her sister has perished, but fearing the queen's wrath they have delayed informing her in the hopes that she'll be defeated in the next round of the tournament.
